The recent AIL game between Clonmel v Monkstown was an important milestone for the MAR. After 17 seasons on the All-Ireland League circuit covering approximately 150 matches and refereeing all but one of the 50 current Senior AIL clubs Barrie O'Connell has brought his national refereeing career to a close.
Throughout his time, Barrie became a trusted and respected figure on the pitch, known for his calm authority, consistency, and passion for the game. His influence extended well beyond domestic rugby serving as an Assistant Referee in the European Champions Cup, Challenge Cup, Rugby Europe, Club International fixtures, PRO14/URC, and the U20 Six Nations.
He also acted as 4th and 5th official in the Men’s, Women’s, and U20 Six Nations, and was part of history as 5th official for Munster v South Africa in the first-ever rugby match held at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Though stepping back from the national stage, Barrie will continue to referee with MAR and coach the next generation of officials continuing to give back to the game he’s served so well.
Well done Barrie, for your dedication, professionalism, and outstanding contribution to Irish rugby.
